The Importance of Training the Core Muscles
Strengthening the core muscles (abdominals/obliques/low back) is often neglected by several athletes, including soccer players, who equate strength needs primarily for the lower body due to the obvious demands of the sport of soccer. Several athletes do not realize that all force generated by the musculoskeletal system in the upper and lower body either originates, is stabilized by, or is transferred through the trunk and low torso. Given this fact, if soccer players are to develop their full strength and power potential, then a portion of their strength & conditioning program should focus on the abdominals/obliques/low back.

Who's the top Yank: Landon Donovan or Clint Dempsey?
There are some debates than never seem to get settled, but never seem to get old, either: Kobe Bryant vs. LeBron James . Michael Jordan vs. Magic Johnson . Ginger vs. MaryAnn on Gilligan's Island. And, the latest for U.S. soccer fans _ Landon Donovan or Clint Dempsey ?
Who is the best American player right now? Depends whom you ask.
The two U.S. stars had a rare matchup in Friday's fourth round FA Cup match between Fulham and Everton. Dempsey is Fulham's scoring machine, with two hat tricks in the past two weeks alone. Donovan is on loan to Everton from the Los Angeles Galaxy, and has been playing very well. Donovan set up both goals in Everton's 2-0 win over Fulham on Friday.
American fans seem to fall into two camps, the Landon camp and the Clint camp. Landon, they say, is the most famous U.S. player in the world and has done the most for American soccer. Clint supporters point out that he is the most prolific U.S. scorer in English Premier League history, and where better to earn respect than in a league with that kind of tradition?

Team of the Week
He may have been on the losing side and conceded three goals, but Shay Given was incredibly unfortunate to do so and thoroughly deserves his place in the team of the week. Aston Villa lost 3-2 away to Arsenal to exit the FA Cup but the reality is that without Given it could have been far worse (Arsenal had 12 efforts on target).
Villa's 2-0 lead at half-time would have been non-existent without his shot-stopping ability and he was at fault for none of the goals conceded; Robin van Persie scored two penalties while Theo Walcott was simply in the right place at the right time as a clearance hit him and was sent goalwards. Manager Alex McLeish may never win over Villa's fans, but none can deny what a shrewd signing Given has been.
Tony McMahon's duel with James McClean was a particular highlight of Middlesbrough's 1-1 draw away to Sunderland. Not only did the result set up an income-boosting FA Cup fourth round replay for the Championship club, Middlesbrough ensured they avoided a morale-sapping derby defeat to one of their biggest rivals. McMahon's tenacity meant McClean failed to get the better of him throughout, despite an impressive performance, and meant the winger's greatest success came elsewhere. Could do little about Sunderland's equaliser.

Is stubbornness costing United?
Sir Alex Ferguson has been a great manager since the day he swapped boots for an overcoat. His ability to build teams, find, develop and motivate players, as well as win trophies is simply second-to-none. He has a resume that is 99% flawless - except when it comes to stubbornness.
Admittedly we don't see this side of Sir Alex Ferguson often but when he thinks he is right, he digs in and it takes a heck of a lot to move him.
Think back a few years to the Juan Sebastian Veron experiment. The Argentine playmaker moved to Old Trafford from Italian club Lazio with all the right credentials. At the time Veron was the biggest transfer fee paid by an English club - $44 million.

Morgan leads US past rival Canada, 4-0
Now Abby Wambach only has Mia Hamm to beat.
The veteran striker scored twice Sunday night, moving into second place on the international scoring list, and the U.S. women's soccer team beat Canada 4-0 in the championship game of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament.
Wambach and Alex Morgan made for a formidable tandem, accounting for all the goals in a game for bragging rights among neighboring rivals. The U.S. and Canada already wrapped up berths in the London Olympics with their semifinal victories Friday.
Wambach's head-flick provided the assist on Morgan's goal in the fourth minute, then Morgan assisted in the 24th and 28th as Wambach pushed her career total to 131 goals, one ahead of longtime U.S. captain Kristine Lilly. The 31-year-old forward said last week that it's only a matter of time before she or Canada's Christine Sinclair topple Hamm's record of 158, but that's still a few years off.

Support Henry finds at Arsenal remains missing at home in France
Ten minutes. That's how long it took Thierry Henry to write the latest incredible chapter of his Arsenal career. Returning four years after his last game, and exactly one month after shedding tears at the unveiling of the statue in his honor outside the Emirates Stadium, Henry scored the winning goal in Arsenal's FA Cup third round win over Leeds United.
"This has to be the story of the season!" declared the TV commentator calling the game, and sure enough, the English press went into overdrive.
Most headlines reprised the "King Henry the Second" theme while The Times of London put Henry on its front page, with the headline, "Henry restores va-va-voom."

Women's Professional Soccer suspends its 2012 season
The U.S. women's soccer league won't play the 2012 season amid a legal dispute with an ousted owner.
The league's Board of Governors voted Monday to suspend the season with hopes of resuming in 2013, Women's Professional Soccer announced.
In October, it terminated its South Florida franchise after clashing with owner Dan Borislow all season. A Florida judge ruled earlier this month that the league failed to follow its own dispute procedures when it terminated the franchise, and another court hearing is set for Wednesday.
WPS CEO Jennifer O'Sullivan said owners chose to cancel the season over possibly working with Borislow in the league again.
